Avery M. D. Davis is a National Academy of Education/Spencer Dissertation Fellow at Johns Hopkins University.

Grounded in his experiences as a higher education administrator, advocate, and activist, Avery uses quantitative methods to research the sociology of education.

Background

Avery’s research agenda examines how ethnic and economic minorities navigate schools and society in pursuit of social mobility. He uses observational data and advanced statistical procedures to investigate the extent to which programs, policies, and practices are biased against marginalized groups.

He is a member of the American Sociological Association, the American Educational Research Association, and the Association for the Study of Higher Education. In addition to his scholarly work, Avery has served in higher education leadership roles at Purdue University, Concordia College New York, and Valparaiso University.
